That the gameplay is boring and that most of this game is unremarkable. This is one of the lowlights of this game. Now, let me just say that there were a couple of positives with the gameplay. I thought the slide races were fun and even addicting at times.

Also, the red coin missions were unique. Some levels had some pretty good red coin missions. At the end of the day, the gameplay is just lacking the fun factor. Getting Mario to do something as simple as turning around degrees without falling off a cliff can be a challenge. Sometimes Mario will make an unexpected turn and you will have to catch him in time before he runs into a trap. However, he can move faster with a long jump. This is a nice feature.

However, it was executed poorly if you ask me. Wall jumping, oh boy wall jumping. In Super Mario Galaxy, the wall jumping controls worked just fine.

In this game however, wall jumping is a nuisance. To top it all off, wall jumping is necessary to complete certain tasks. As mentioned earlier, the controls for swimming are awkward.

Turning in a circle feels too slow and to swim faster, you need to keep tapping the A button. This hurts the thumb fast. What about flying with the Wing Cap? The controls for this thing are stiff. To do so, you need to fly down and then glide up.

However, this is very hard to do and you might lose a life trying this. Turning while flying feels stiff as well. You would think turning at a slow pace would be easier, but no. It seems that going faster makes your turns much sharper for some reason. Other than turning degrees at a standstill without moving forward, he moved just fine. There were quite a few areas in the game that made it hard to fall off, so having some sense of control was nice.

Still, the controls could definitely be improved. I know this is from an earlier console and the controls were innovative at the time, but if you look back at it now, it just looks bad. The camera is bad. The angles you are given in most areas become a hindrance and make most missions unacceptably difficult to complete. Adjusting the camera angle becomes a pain. Most of the time you will need to alter the angle so you can make your life easier.

However, this becomes old fast and most times you might ignore changing the camera. There is no reason why I should be given a bad camera angle in a 3D platforming game. Being given a bad camera angle is what made me die a lot in this game. I know this game comes from an earlier generation, but give me a break.

The camera is all around bad. Changing the angle while swimming was okay though. The sound effects in this game are rather vibrant. Not much else to say about them. It feels like yesterday since I bought a second-hand Nintendo 64 with a gray cartridge of Super Mario 64 , both without the boxes they usually came in from the store. This, however, happened more than two decades ago, which makes me feel old, but also amazed at the fact that Super Mario 64 still holds up as one of the best 3D platformer games ever made.
