Danielle Steel. I haven't read a DS novel in about 15 years. This book has reminded me why I really don't like her. How repetitive can a person be? Seriously, the central issue is that the mom dies in a car accident is the sister is blinded from a head injury. Sisters is truly the worst I'm about half-way through this book. Sisters is truly the worst book ever written. I just cannot believe how bad it is. It's sad when you build up such high expectations for something and then come to the reality that no, you set the bar far, far too high, this doesn't even come close to meeting those expectations.
That's how I felt about this book. I have never read anything by Danielle Steel before, and I highly doubt I will read anything by her again after this. Though to be fair, this was the first and only time I had ever been interested in pursuing a book of hers. I liked the premise of Sisters , it sounded li It's sad when you build up such high expectations for something and then come to the reality that no, you set the bar far, far too high, this doesn't even come close to meeting those expectations.
I liked the premise of Sisters , it sounded like it could have been a really interesting story, and I think it would have been It tells the story of surprise, surprise four sisters: Candy is the youngest, is 21, and she's a high fashion model. Annie is an artist living in Italy mid 20's. Tammy is a television producer out in Hollywood, getting ready for the big And Sabrina, the oldest, is in her mid 30's and is a New York City lawyer.
Only Sabrina and Annie have boyfriends, and Sabrina's has been with her for years and years; he'd like to get married, but Sabrina has a phobia when it comes to marriage I should mention this is because she's a divorce lawyer. Every year, the four sisters gather in New England with their parents for 4th of July, and that's when "stuff happens".
After said "stuff", the sisters have to figure out how they will move forward, both separately and together. So right there, it sounded like an interesting premise to say the least it's not necessarily "original", but it sounded interesting at least to me. It helped me understand the differences of these four women and where they were coming from. I also really liked that the book focuses a great deal on the sisters relationship and interactions with one another. While yes, there is romance in the story, it is not your typical romance novel in the sense that the romance is not center-stage.
And sadly, that's about it, when it comes to the stuff I liked. They're all gorgeous, and Steel is quick to remind you every.
Even when one of them is having a horrible day, even after one of them is in a horrific accident, they still come out looking beautiful with every hair in place and not a blemish or scar or mark on their body. I found it insulting, as if the author didn't think her readers had brains to make sense of what she had written.
Very "dumbed-down". One little thing that I found annoying was how vague certain descriptions were. Annie is the artist living in Italy.
All of the sisters think this is absolutely devastating that their sister is blind We are told this many times throughout the book, "oh the tragedy of Annie being blind, because she's an artist". A photographer? A sculptor? Does she sketch? It's never really explained, just that vague "artist" term used over and over. If I were Annie, I'd be pissed as hell on both counts. There are a few other things, but after mentioning those two, really, does one need others? Yeah, major disappointment, I really wanted to like this book, I even wanted to give it at least a 2 star rating, but while writing this review, the flaws just built and built to the point where I just don't feel I can justify giving this book more than a single star rating.
The reason I "finished" it was because I was listening to the audio book on a long cross-state road trip. If I were reading this in actual book format, I doubt I would have managed.
Oct 21, Kylie rated it it was ok Shelves: audiobooks. Typically after reading a dark crime book I like to read something light like a rom com or chick lit to cleanse by mind. Unfortunately this didn't do it for me. We get it!! Aug 10, Stephanie Jenkins Ortiz Cerrillo rated it really liked it. I'm one of four sister's so this book really drew me in. The closeness of these sister's makes it a very sweet book to read even though it has plenty of tragic events.
Four sister's on their own paths in life each successful in their career choices return to their hometown to celebrate the Fourth of July just like they do every year. Tragedy strikes and turns their lives upside down. This close knit family will never be the same again. A truly heart felt book and was a pleasure to read. Apr 01, Brandie rated it did not like it. If there was a rating lower than one star, I would give it to this. It was not written well at all, breaking every rule of writing--and not in a good way.
I could not even finish it, though I tried a hundred pages worth. I do not recommend this at all, to anyone, and the only thing I learned from it is that if this could get published, then I could. Mar 08, Lendoxia rated it really liked it. Chick lit that's enjoyable to read.
Warm and predictable story about four sisters when their lives get turned upside down. Would recommend : Chick lit that's enjoyable to read.
Would recommend Jun 20, Tejasvi rated it did not like it Shelves: waste-of-time , read-in , gave-up-in-the-middle , realistic-fiction , gagging , reviewed , rip-braincells , kill-me-already. The best part about this book is Tammy's pet dog Juanita. There's nobody else in the book who even stood out as an individual character. It was written horribly and repeated everything, like I'm going to do right here while saying this book is terrible.
Or has this book even been edited? Why is everything repeated like 20 times? I don't need to be told that their mother likes having them home once every paragraph I'm not kidding, I hope I was. Or that Candy is very beautiful The best part about this book is Tammy's pet dog Juanita. Or that Candy is very beautiful. Once or twice is enough, maybe even 5 times. I'm not going to mention more because it's just going to take too much space and I have more to say. It drove me crazy about how perfect each of these girls were.
I could keep on listing. And all of the girls felt like the same person to me. Danielle Steel reminded me again and again about how "They looked entirely different but they were sisters to the core" Wrong. They all think and act the same. Danielle Steel should have reminded us that they are the same person but she is trying very hard to make them feel like individuals by giving them different looks and placing them in different parts of the world, so we should be nice and pretend that the story was awesome.
I was actually very glad when view spoiler [their mother died hide spoiler ] , so that I wouldn't have to hear more about why she loved having the girls at home. It was exhaustiung until chapter 5.
Their lives were all very superficial and unrealistic. In reality, siblings do love each other, but NOT in the perfect way Danielle Steel seems to think is real. There is no conflict at all between the sisters, as one would imagine, or between the mother and the sisters.
Not even like tiny arguments that are there in any real relationship. I just couldn't help imagining what would happen if one of them spilled juice or something on someone else's favorite book: "Ahhhhh, darling sister. Your precious juice spilled! Let me go make you a whole jug full! Would that be satisfactory? Let's go on a picnic now!
Oh and did I mention all the contradictions in the book? I'm not going to list them out now, because I have no wish to go read through it again to find them. I was so furious at their father. And doesn't visit her when she's had an operation in her brain and has just lost her sight. Peter Haskell is president of a major pharmaceutical empire, and Olivia Thatcher is unhappily married to a leading senator.
